A Brief History

Before Rose City Coffee Company, we were just two individuals living in Portland wanting to learn more about the craft we loved most: coffee! What started as a way to earn money in school quickly became a preoccupation. We were soon reading up on roasting methods, coffee chemistry, the origin of green coffee beans, and even the history of coffee (fun fact, the term "cup of Joe" was born in the navy.*) We eventually wanted more than knowledge about coffee though: we wanted to create it. Our bare bones, hand-powered approach resulted in us building several functional, small scale kiln roasters from scratch at our house.

Originally, we started roasting purely for our own enjoyment and to share with friends and family. As word spread, we found ourselves being asked for more and more coffee than we were able to churn out our homemade machine, and the operation moved to a small gas-electric roaster. Though the homespun kiln is no longer in use, the attention to detail and small scale principles which informed our backyard roasting still captain our roasting process.

And though we believe our coffee will speak for itself, we're also happy to tell you about it! As a two man operation, we pride ourselves in taking care of each and every one of our customers on a personal basis. You'll always be able to get in touch with the roaster, the accountant, and the owners!

We started Rose City Coffee Company with the aspiration of making specialty coffee available to everyone, and would love to share it with you.

We hope you enjoy our coffee as much as we've enjoyed crafting it.
